Gray honored for 32 years with APD

Andrews Assistant Police Chief Kim Gray has always been known for a steely exterior that earned him monikers like “Iron Lieutenant.”

But the “Iron Man’ nickname could also pertain to Gray’s longevity with the Andrews Police Department. Gray has been with the APD 32 years.

He started as a patrolman way back when, was promoted to the lieutenant rank more than 25 years ago and has filled the assistant chief role the past year.

Gray was honored Friday afternoon for his long tenure that will come to a close at the end of the month.

The Dow Jones has rallied 1400 points off its Wednesday intraday low and the Volatility Index VIX is still at 30. That ought to tell us something about the market environment we’re in. One piece of bad news could easily send us back to the recent lows, so keep that in mind if you’re trading short-term. Crude oil ($WTIC) is higher by 1.50% this morning to $45.28 per barrel, also remaining rather close to its recent lows - not a great signal for global economic conditions.

Robert “Bob” Lee Whaley - may he rest in peace as he departed this world on December 19, 2018 and moved on to the next to be with his wife of 61 years who preceded him in death on August 7, 2018. He was born in Hopkins, Missouri on May 15, 1935 to Harley Ivan Whaley and Merle Mary O’Riley Whaley and where until recently he still owned half of the family farm that had been in their family over 75 years. He enjoyed the time he spent in Missouri with his brothers and family working on the farm to restore the native tall grass prairie that covered the land before farming began.

Average gas prices are under $2/gallon

Gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 5.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.99/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.9 cents per gallon versus last week to $2.31/g, according to GasBuddy.

Average gasoline prices on December 24 in Texas have ranged widely over the last five years:$2.18/g in 2017, $2.06/g in 2016, $1.77/g in 2015, $2.10/g in 2014 and $3.05/g in 2013.

In their two prior games, the Andrews Lady Mustangs basketball team had played two excellent second halves to at least have something to build on.

First, they outplayed 6A Odessa High in the last two quarters to keep the game competitive and then they went ‘basketball crazy’ in the second half at Big Spring to get their biggest win of the season.

In their last game before the holiday break, coach Annie McKee’s girls went completely backwards against 6A Permian, playing a good first half and a poor second half.

Five Mustangs earn football honors

A grand total of five members of the 2018 Andrews Mustangs football team earned some sort of award during the holiday postseason awards.

Four of the five recognized, including senior defensive end and linebacker Jacob Mechler and senior offensive lineman Reece Azam, junior quarterback Brett Leach and sophomore wideout Markeese Lawrence, were selected to both the All-Permian Basin and 2018 Football All-Stars squad. Also, AHS junior linebacker Esau Flores was named to the top team in the Midland Reporter-Telegram All-Star selections.
