CRIMINAL SENTENCING

Two of four suspects arrested in March following a high speed vehicle pursuit that began on U.S. Highway 385 south of town and ended inside the city limits were recently sentenced in 109th District Court, according to district clerk’s office records.

During a Sept. 30 hearing, Taylor Joe McCarty of Odessa received three years in the Texas Department of Corrections on a possession of a controlled substance case and one year in state jail for evading arrest detention with a vehicle, court records revealed.

Renovation to provide living quarters at EMS building

EMS PROJECT

In a move that will improve response time overnight, the EMS facility—formerly the fire station—will soon undergo renovation to add dorm-like rooms and a kitchen, according to city officials.

The city council budgeted $800,000 for the project this year, Andrews City Manager Steve Eggleston said.

The upcoming renovation to provide living quarters will enable up to four paramedics to stay overnight at the E. Broadway building.

Ribbon cutting set soon for new Pilot Flying J

The Pilot Flying J Travel Center on S. Main St. opened for business late last week, and attracted a large crowd of customers—most of whom appeared to be satisfied, based on social media comments.

Groundbreaking on the $5 million project began around mid-July and construction was completed in just over three months.

The initial stages involved demolishing an old structure at 1103 S. Main St. to make way for construction of the Pilot Flying J Travel Center.

Commissioners approve hiring new assistant county attorney

COMMISSIONERS COURT

The commissioners court on Tuesday approved hiring an assistant county attorney who will work under Andrews County/District Attorney Tim Mason. Commissioners acted on a recommendation from Mason to approve the full-time employment of Sean Galloway as assistant county attorney, according to Precinct Commissioner Jim Waldrop.

Galloway will replace longtime Andrews County Assistant Attorney Cassandra Cheek, who is stepping down from the role to assume a private practice in Midland, Waldrop said.

Three of six county incumbents have already announced re-election bids

ELECTION FILING

The filing period for the March Primary Election begins Saturday, and at least several of the county incumbents plan to file the first day, according to Andrews County Election Administrator Gracie Mendoza.

Mendoza said the filing period runs from Nov. 9 to 6 p.m. Dec. 9.

Typically, the vast majority of county candidates file through the Republican Party.

Randy Rowe serves as the local Republican Chair.

Floyd’s boys have gold in their mind!

“It’s a different animal competing at state,” said AHS Cross Country head coach Wade Floyd while talking about his boys team plus Samantha Jasso’s upcoming state run at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock Saturday.

No doubt it is!

A year after the AHS boys’ team finished second to Decatur by 3/100s of a second 123.38 to 123.41 for the state title, Floyd has his boys’ team in the thick of the state conversation.

Only problem is that the state conversation also has San Elizario, Decatur, Progresso, Spring Hill and Canyon in the mix.

District title on the line Friday when Andrews host Seminole

Shoot straight!

The rest is easy!

A season ago, a heavily favored Andrews Mustangs football team traveled to Seminole on the last Friday of their regular season with the district championship on the line and got smacked around a lot!

Seminole was more than ready!

Not sure if that makes 2019 a revenge game, but anytime Andrews and Seminole meet in any kind of sporting event – not much motivation is needed.

Riding an eight-game winning streak with at least two impressive wins, Coach Ralph Mason’s boys once again are big time favorites (20 points) Friday.

Mustangs picked by 20 over Seminole

The Andrews Mustangs keep winning noncompetitive football games and going nowhere in the Harris Ratings Weekly.

Andrews hasn’t lost since Week 0, yet have been bounced around from 14th to 20-something for over two months. In those eight wins, AHS has won seven by double digits and Harris still doesn’t know what to do with them.

AHS boys win own tourney

Make no mistake – the Andrews High School boys’ golf program is in good shape!

Maybe even great!

Hosting their own Andrews Golf Classic Friday and Saturday, the number two AHS boys’ team won the team title in the 11-team field with rounds of 327 and 334 for a 661, while the number three AHS team finished seventh with a 769 total on rounds of 392 and

377. Second place went to Seminole’s number one team with a 691 two-day total.
