Nine hospital staff members are in home isolation after recently testing positive for coronavirus

The local hospital recently had a small outbreak of virus cases mostly among administrative nursing staff that did not have “intimate, prolonged contact” with patients, according to Permian Regional Medical Center CEO Donny Booth.

PRMC CNO Danny Whitehead told the hospital board at Thursday’s meeting that nine hospital staff members were in home quarantine after testing positive for COVID.

“That’s the other side of the (virus) puzzle creating a bit of a challenge,” Whitehead said at the board meeting.

Pay schedule approved for PD will help with recruitment

The city council on Thursday approved a new pay rate schedule for the police department to make it more competitive with recruiting and keeping peace officers, according to city officials.

A recent survey conducted by the city revealed other area agencies start officers out at much higher salaries—in some cases more than $10,000, they added.

An appropriation of $259,810 from federal coronavirus relief funds was approved to finance the new rate schedule, which bumps up starting officer pay 19 percent and goes into effect during the city’s next full pay cycle.

On a cold, windy Friday morning, the culmination of years of planning and a “near flawless” design and construction process rose to the forefront during a dedication ceremony of the county’s new $28-million jail/sheriff’s office facility.

Andrews County Sheriff Rusty Stewart and Andrews County Judge Charlie Falcon provided dedication speeches, followed by a walkthrough of the facility during the open house portion of the ceremony.

And so it begins! After clearly being the best team tennis program in the district, the Andrews Mustangs are ready and loaded.

Andrews easily won the 2-4A district title without getting challenged.

Andrews Coach Scott Swyden’s team will start their playoff run Tuesday in Fort Stockton against an El Paso team from 1-4A still to be determined. The bi-district match is set to start at 12:30 p.m.

Competitive sports anyway!

When one team is very good and the other team is very bad, the things that took place at the Andrews Mustangs and Lake View Chiefs district contest Friday night at San Angelo Stadium are to be expected.

Andrews was so much better than the Chiefs that by halftime Coach Ralph Mason’s boys had eight touchdowns and 503 yards of offense.

Not in the game but in the first half.

Arrest made after van pursuit

An Austin man who led law enforcement officers on a high-speed vehicle pursuit early Wednesday through part of Andrews—and later on N. U.S. Highway 385—was stopped just before entering Seminole’s city limits, according to police.

Marc Anthony Gonzales was arrested following the chase and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest detention with a vehicle. The pursuit reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour on Highway 385 and 70 mph on N. Main St. in Andrews, according to Andrews Police Chief Ronny McCarver.

Man charged for stealing automotive parts, tools

An Andrews man was arrested Thursday for allegedly breaking into an automotive shop and stealing valuable parts and tools, according to police.

Auden Castillo was apprehended later in the day after police obtained a search warrant for a residence in northeast Andrews.

Castillo was charged with one count of burglary of a building and two counts of burglary of a vehicle, police said.

A total bond amount of was set at $35,000 on Castillo, who remained in custody as of Friday night, according to Andrews County Jail records.

AMS 8th ‘A’ boys blank Big Spring

The Andrews Mustangs 8th grade ‘A’ football team had very little trouble keeping their unbeaten season record alive with a lopsided 47-0 win over Big Spring last Thursday.

The twosome of Leeroy Millan and Juan Leos combined to score the first four AMS touchdowns. Millan scored on a 3-yard run and a 42-yard scoring toss from QB Ryan Gafford, while Leos scored on a 13-yard run and an 8-yard TD pass from Gafford. Daylon Jefcoats caught a conversion pass and Kyle Covington kicked a PAT.

AMS 7th ‘A’ boys beat Big Spring

Just on touchdown runs, Jaesean Debouse accounted for 269 rushing yards to lead the Andrews Mustangs 7th ‘A’ football team to a one-sided 40-0 blanking of the Big Spring Steers. Debouse proved to be way too much for the Steers defense with scoring runs of 98, 28, 85 and 58 yards. Also, Rylan Diaz caught a 45-yard TD pass from QB Raider Harvey and JP Espinosa completed the TD scoring with a 56-yard run. Evan Medina had a conversion on a pass from Harvey and Harvey ran in another conversion for the 40-0 final score.

Defense leads 8th ‘B’ Ponies to 6-0 victory

Defense was the name of the game in the Andrews and Greenwood 8th ‘B’ game Thursday and the Mustangs were just a tad-bit better.

With Coach Raul Rodriguez’ boys keeping the Rangers offense out of the end-zone the entire game, Andrews claimed a tough 6-0 win for their sixth win of the season.

On the Andrews offense, Demitri Hair scored on a 55-yard run for the lone touchdown. Hair ended the game with a game high 80 rushing yards.
