U.S. Census count revealed Andrews County’s population increased nearly 26 percent since 2010

Andrews County experienced a larger growth increase over the past 10 years than any other county in the area, according to recently released results from the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau.

Many perhaps believed Andrews County had surpassed 20,000 in population in recent years, but the recent census count— which involved residents filling out forms and the normal door-to-door effort hindered by COVID— showed otherwise.

The census revealed Andrews County’s population at 18,610, which is a substantial 25.9 percent increase from the previous census count in 2010.

Landgraf files bill that prohibits high-level waste in Texas

State Rep Brooks Landgraf filed a bill in the House this week that would prevent high-level radioactive waste from coming to Waste Control Specialists’ site in Andrews County.

Texas legislators are currently meeting in a second special session in Austin but still lack a quorum due to Democrats who left the state last month in an attempt to prolong the passage of election integrity legislation.

Landgraf said Tuesday most have returned and he expects a required twothirds quorum to be met during this session.

Andrews man arrested after shooting outside local residence

An ongoing verbal argument between two family members led to a Sunday afternoon shooting incident outside a northwest Andrews residence, according to police.

Thirty-six-year-old Adrian Gomez was shot once in his upper torso by a .40-caliber handgun at around 2:45 p.m., officers said.

Man awarded recent judgment in suit claiming he was overserved alcohol is arrested for DWI

An Andrews man who last month was awarded $5.5 million through a lawsuit claiming he was overserved alcohol at La Fogata that led to injuries from a fight on premises was arrested Tuesday by police on a DWI charge.

Daniel Rawls is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated second after police pulled over the Dodge Durango he was driving in southwest Andrews.

Bond was set at $5,000 on Rawls, who remained in custody as of Tuesday evening, according to Andrews Jail records.

Well, it’s not real but it is as real as it is going to get – for now anyway!

Even so it is a mighty important ‘not so real’ one!

With only one football scrimmage on their schedule after not being able to find an opponent for their other one, the Andrews Mustangs will finally get to hit somebody besides themselves Thursday when they host Canyon Randall Raiders at the Mustang Bowl.

The Andrews JV and freshman teams are both set to start at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity at 5:30 p.m.

Chain crew

The AHS athletic department is looking for responsible adults interested in being part of the ‘chain crew’ for the Andrews Mustangs varsity football games.

The Mustangs have only four varsity games slated for 2021, but are looking for four or five people interested in the paid position. Interested individuals need to work a couple of scrimmages to get a feel for the game and all that goes with the ‘chain crew.’

Volleyball girls win 5 of 6 at tourney

Season in, season out, the field at the Shallowater Classic is usually talented loaded.

2021 was no different!

And so, for the Andrews Lady Mustangs volleyball team to come out with a 5-wins and 1-loss record and fifth place behind a thrilling come-from-behind win over Lubbock Christian (14-25, 30-28, 25-22) says a lot about Coach Jessica Campbell’s up and coming varsity squad.

You can gauge the overall talent of a team anyway you want, but the best way is with ‘Ws.’

The more wins, the more fun!

Under that spotlight, Andrews High School tennis coach Scott Swyden’s troops are having a ton of fun.

Even so, there is more!

Andrews is not just winning, but beating bigger schools in the process.

Competing in the Basin Brawl this past weekend, Andrews posted a perfect 3-wins and no-losses record and the three schools they beat were all 6A: Permian 14-5, Odessa High 10-6 and Midland Legacy 13-2.

Police Tahoe sustains minor damage following high-speed vehicle pursuit

An Andrews man who led police on a high-speed vehicle chase through residential areas Saturday morning was eventually apprehended—but not until after he bailed out of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot as well.

A police Tahoe also sustained minor damage after the suspect vehicle backed into it after the suspect fled on foot, APD Lt. Brandi Schulze said.

Oscar Reyes Vasquez was eventually arrested and charged with evading arrest detention with a vehicle and evading arrest detention.
