To have two out of 12 be considered the ‘cream of the crop’ is something special. Nine of 12 is almost unbelievable! The Texas High School Coaches Association just released its 4A Super Elite team for boys and girls swimming, and Andrews High School was all over the place in the 24-athlete panel. Especially on the boys side where Coach Mike Waldmann’s program not only had the MVP in Brenden Ferguson, but nine total. On the girls side, Andrews had two for a grand total of 11 of the 24. Aside from MVP Ferguson, the other eight Andrews boys athletes included Wyatt Bennett, Landyn Brewer, Joab Montoya, Joel Patin, Darin Powers, Jage Stokes, Cole Tompkins and Elijah Trevino. All the other 4A schoolscombinedmanaged to sneak in three with Zane Garner of El Campo, Henry Johnson of Boerne and Zachary Poupart of Great Heights Monte Vista North High School also making the Super Elite 12. For the girls, Hannah Montoya and Rebecca Robertson made the Super Elite 12, with Valeria Ivandy-Gomez of Great Heights as the MVP. Great Heights had three altogether, including MVP Gomez, Chloe Jones and Maddie Mealey. El Campo had the most on the girls side with four, including Rachel Evans, Holly Foegelle, Juliann Little and Riley Wallis. Rounding out the girls picks were Brenna McCarty of Boerne, Ava Valchar of Needville and Sophie Stowers of Brazosport. Said Coach Waldmann, “This is the first year that THSCA has recognized the efforts of swimmers and divers. To place this many athletes on their ‘S.E.T.’ (Super Elite Team) is absolutely remarkable. This, again, shows the reputation that each of our swimmers and divers have earned throughout the state. Placing the number of athletes we had in the State Meet certainly helped keep this team towards the top of the rankings. As we have stated before...we didn’t come to just ‘Take our Mark’.... our goal was to ‘MAKE OUR MARK!’ What a great year this has been for this extraordinary team. It is humbling to be recognized for the efforts that each of our swimmers and divers have made.”
