The Andrews Middle School tennis team took care of business on the courts last weekend, winning the Odessa Tennis Tournament team title. The tournament was a combined 7th and 8th grades field and Andrews had several 7th graders who placed. Despite having several key players out with illness or injuries, the Mustangs still managed to rack up 92 points to outscore second place San Jacinto of Midland by 27 points. Other schools scoring points were Odessa Nimitz, Midland Alamo, Odessa Bowie, and Odessa Crockett. Andrews had several players place second, third or consolation but captured two of the titles. In girls singles, Melina Lopez beat an Odessa Nimitz player in the finals and the mixed doubles team of Ashton Jays and Marlee Ortiz had four convincing wins in 8th grade doubles to easily take first place honors. Their semifinals win over a Midland San Jacinto twosome seeded number one in the tournament was impressive before taking out a team from Midland Alamo in the finals. Also medaling were Anailin Porras with a third in girls singles and Kaylee Mancilla was the consolation champion, plus Ruben Villalobos ended up second in boys singles. In girls doubles, Evelyn Everts and Zabrina Mead Johnson finished second followed by teammates Sophia Rosales and Emmalyn Tate in third and Callie Bowen and Anahi Sanchez in consolation, respectively. In boys doubles, the combo of Ace Escobar and Cooper Helbig placed third to score team points. “Congratulations to all but especially the 8th grade who finished their junior high career undefeated,” said Coach George May. “The past two years, they were 13-0 in duals, and won all 12 of the tournaments they entered, 6 this year and 6 last year.”
