CRIMINAL SENTENCING

Two of four suspects arrested in March following a high speed vehicle pursuit that began on U.S. Highway 385 south of town and ended inside the city limits were recently sentenced in 109th District Court, according to district clerk’s office records.

During a Sept. 30 hearing, Taylor Joe McCarty of Odessa received three years in the Texas Department of Corrections on a possession of a controlled substance case and one year in state jail for evading arrest detention with a vehicle, court records revealed.

Renovation to provide living quarters at EMS building

EMS PROJECT

In a move that will improve response time overnight, the EMS facility—formerly the fire station—will soon undergo renovation to add dorm-like rooms and a kitchen, according to city officials.

The city council budgeted $800,000 for the project this year, Andrews City Manager Steve Eggleston said.

The upcoming renovation to provide living quarters will enable up to four paramedics to stay overnight at the E. Broadway building.

One week after a pregnant Lamesa woman was gunned down by multiple shots fired through a home window, an Andrews man is now in custody on a charge of capital murder.

Demarcus Dwain Bufford, age 29, was arrested about 6:12 p.m. Friday in Andrews, according to various sources.

Bufford was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 28-year-old Champagne Woods and her unborn child in Lamesa last Saturday night, Oct. 19.

City officials are continuing to seek possibilities with either renovating the longtime city hall or potentially building a new one.

On Thursday, the council approved purchasing a property located across the street from city hall, and heard an update from Andrews City Manager Steve Eggleston regarding a public notice the city is running to potentially acquire property in the proximity of city hall for exchange of surface rights to land owned by the city in northern Andrews County.

Rollover damages vehicle, driver escapes unscathed

A single vehicle rollover this month on FM 2187 involving pickup resulted in substantial damage but no injuries, according to authorities.

The crash was apparently caused when the driver lost control and attempted to overcorrect the steering. The pickup rolled off the side of the roadway and came to rest on its top in pastureland.

Annual sales tax is the city’s third best

With another solid sales tax rebate check to conclude the fiscal year, the city finished just shy of its best ever annual total.

The most recent check from the state comptroller’s office totaled around $697,000 to push Andrews past the $8 million figure for the third time.

The city amassed a grand total of $8.35 million this year for its second best year to date.

In 2014, the city generated $8.52 million for the highest total, while $8.24 million was collected in 2015.
