Villarreal helps AHS boys long distance runners finish first

When it comes to 4A long distance running – Andrews High School is Andrews High School.

Hands down, it is one of the best 4A programs in the state!

Facts don’t lie!

Despite missing their top two runners, the AHS boys captured the team title at the Lubbock Invitational Saturday with 44 points to beat second place Perryton by a dozen points. In the girls’ race, Andrews finished fourth with 107 points.

Joiner, Tellez carry AHS swimmers to dual wins

Andrews’ Avery Joiner, a state finalist the last two seasons, and Javan Tellez combined for four individual first-place finishes plus were members of three winning relay foursomes to help AHS get their season off to an impressive start with dominating dual meet wins over Pecos and Monahans in their own Sprint Extravaganza.

Joiner won the 25 free with an 11.86 and the 50 free with a 25.16 plus was a part of two winning relays, including the 100 free and 200 free to lead the way to the Lady Mustangs beating Pecos 200-78 and Monahans 200-101.

Late TD gives Ponies 9th ‘B’ huge 14-12 win

The Andrews Mustangs 9th ‘B’ football team claimed a tough 14-12 home win over Hereford Thursday.

Jesse Brandow scored the young Mustangs first TD on a seven-yard run and Jose Payen ran in the conversion for a quick 8-0 AHS Mustangs lead.

Hereford answered with back to back TD’s on a 12-yard run and a 10-yard pass for a 12-8 lead. With 2:05 left in the game, Zion Barrington came up big scoring the winnig TD on a 19-yard run for the 14-12 final.

Leach is top passing QB; Lawrence ranks 21st WR

Make no mistake – the Andrews Mustangs have one of the most potent offensive attacks in the state of Texas,

With an attack that for the most part passes first and asks questions later, Coach Ralph Mason’s offensive juggernaut is as good as there is.

Thanks in large part to quarterback Brett Leach and wide receiver Markeese Lawrence.

With five games in the books, Leach, according to MaxPreps.com is tied for tops in the state in passing yards, while Lawrence ranks 21st .
