Betty Jo Thomas Cooper, a cherished beacon of love and resilience, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 in Lubbock, TX, on October 2, 2024. Born on November 15, 1927, in Boggy Depot, OK, to parents Guy and Jessie Coats Costiloe, she grew up to embody the spirit of hard work, dedication, and the joy of life’s simple pleasures.

Betty’s life was one of service and love, marked by her over 30-year tenure with the Andrews School District. As both a bus driver and cafeteria worker, she touched the lives of countless students with her warmth and kindness. Her commitment to her work was paralleled only by her devotion to her family.

On November 6, 1944, Betty married the love of her life, Dover Preston Thomas Jr., and together they celebrated 46 years of marriage. Their union was blessed with the joy of raising five wonderful children. After Dover’s passing in August of 1991, Betty’s heart found love once more when she married AJ Cooper in 2004. They shared seven beautiful years of companionship until AJ’s passing in 2011.

Betty was the beloved mother of son Jerry Lee Thomas Sr. and his wife Marlana of Brownfield, TX; daughters Frances Spence and her husband Andrew of Houston, TX, and Leta Parker of Lumberton, TX. She was the proud grandmother to Jerry Thomas Jr., Leigh Anne Crandall, Mark Fletcher, Rebecca Matherly, Sarah Parker, Spencer Rutenbar, Jorden Rutenbar, Julee Porter, Joby Grant, and Niki Cole. Her legacy extends to numerous great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Jessie, her daughters Becky Ruthenbar and Kay Bigbie, and her grandson Mike Fletcher.

Betty’s zest for life was evident in her love for the outdoors and fishing. Her travels and motorcycle rides with her grandson were among the many adventures that showcased her adventurous spirit. Her energy was boundless, and she found joy in the simplest of activities, from playing card and board games to preparing delicious meals that brought everyone together. Her culinary skills were unrivaled, and her table was always open to friends and family. A super mother in every sense, Betty raised her children with unwavering grace and instilled in them the values of hard work and love.

Betty’s passage from this world leaves behind a legacy of love and memories that will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends. Her life was a testament to the power of love in its purest form, and she will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate her life at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 7, 2024, at The McNett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Carter officiating. She will be laid to rest at the Andrews County West Cemetery. Arrangements are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home.
