Fred was born on July 13, 1928 to his widowed mother, Evelyn Borman, in Elgin, North Dakota. When Fred was four, Evelyn married Oliver Dahl. Fred was raised on the family ranchalongside his sister and three brothers. Much of his time was spent on his favorite pony, Tony, riding herd over their Angus cattle.
Fred served in the army during the Korean conflict, first in the medical division of an engineer boat and shore brigade and, later, at the headquarters of Brook Army Medical Center.
While studying education at Dickinson State University, he met the love of his life, Bernetta Kautz. Knowing they were from the same part of North Dakota, Fred offered Bernetta a ride back home. This led to their first date. After Fred cooked for Bernetta, she told him, “I promised myself that if I ever met a man who could cook, I would ask him to marry me... So, will you marry me?” ...to which Fred replied, “Never.” One year later, they were married and went on to teach in the small town of Haynes, ND.
While completing their master’s degrees at the University of Northern Colorado, a friend told them about the excellent school system in Andrews. In 1957, after seeing it for themselves, they decided to make Andrews their home.
Fred taught fifth grade before becoming the principal of San Andres Elementary School. He was later chosen to plan the opening of Clearfork Elementary School, where he served as the school’s first principal until his retirement.
Fred and Bernetta traveled across the United States and explored several countries in Europe. They were charter members and leaders of Faith Lutheran Church and they both enjoyed pursuing volunteer activities with local organizations. Fred actively participated in the Andrews Chamber of Commerce, Gideons, the Lions Club, Toastmasters, Texas Retired Teachers Association, and worked with the Boy Scouts of America. He and Bernetta volunteered with both Meals on Wheels and the “55 Alive” program for more than 20 years.
Fred loved to watch things grow, planting a garden every year. He was famous for his apple pies with homemade crust, a staple dessert during the holidays. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. A skilled woodworker, he built several pieces of furniture for his house and took on various remodeling projects for his children’s first homes.
Fred is survived by his two children, Cheryl Bains (Bradley) of Midland and Paul Nelson of Austin; grandchildren, Ashley Howell (Ross) and Brensen Bains (Meg) of Midland; great-grandson Bo Bains of Midland; sister, Sharon Herbel; brothers, Maynard Dahl (Joan) and John Dahl (Sandy); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred was predeceased by his beloved wife, Bernetta; parents, Oliver and Evelyn Dahl; and brother LaVerne Dahl.
Fred was a man of integrity and honor, who led by example. He displayed loyalty, warmth, and devotion to those he loved.
Friends appreciated his thoughtfulness and keen sense of humor.
