Lulabel Van Duist
Lulabel Van Duist, a trailblazing banker, devoted mother, and passionate traveler, passed away on July 28, 2024, in Andrews, Texas, at the age of 89. Born on August 7, 1934, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to William and Erma Maltby Earls. Lulabel grew up in Denver City, Texas, where she cultivated a spirit of adventure and a strong sense of community that would define her life.
Lulabel’s academic journey took her to Texas Tech University, where she furthered her education before embarking on a path that would lead her to break glass ceilings in the banking industry. On November 26, 1952, she married the love of her life, Gerard “Peter” Vanduist, in Denver City, Texas. Together, they moved to Andrews, Texas, where Peter worked in the oil field and Lulabel began her storied career in finance.
Her professional accomplishments were nothing short of remarkable. Lulabel served as Vice President of the First National Bank and the National Bank of Andrews, distinguishing herself as a leader and a visionary. She made history as the first woman to become an officer of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas, paving the way for countless women in the industry. Her dedication to her profession was matched only by her commitment to her community.
A long-standing member of the Andrews Rotary Club, Lulabel’s generosity of spirit shone through her work with exchange students, enriching the lives of young people from around the world. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she served with grace and humility as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at the Andrews Presbyterian Church.
Lulabel’s zest for life extended far beyond her professional and community service endeavors. An avid world traveler, she explored the majority of the lower 48 states and traversed the landscapes of Europe, embracing cultures and experiences with open arms and an insatiable curiosity.
Family was the heart of Lulabel’s world. She is survived by her loving son, Ryan Van Duist of Andrews, Texas; her daughter, Gerie Van Duist, and her wife, Leigh Ann Mewhirter, of Dallas, Texas. Lulabel was predeceased by her beloved husband, Peter Van Duist; her brother, Gayle Earls; and her parents, William and Erma Maltby Earls.
Lulabel’s life was a tapestry of love, leadership, and adventure. Her legacy is etched in the hearts of those she touched, and her memory will be cherished by all who knew her. She was a true community servant, a pioneer for women, and a beacon of joy and wisdom to her family and friends.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life, at 2:00PM, Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews, TX., with Dr. Donnie Rollie officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park, in Dallas, TX. Arrangements are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home and Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lulabel’s name to the North Texas Food Bank.
