Johnny Ray Scarbrough
Johnny Ray Scarbrough, a beacon of joy and cherished family man, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024, in Odessa, Texas. Born on August 4, 1937, in Gaines County, Texas, to Raymond and Helen Scarbrough, Johnny’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, resilience, and the joy of sports.
Johnny’s early life in Texas set a strong foundation for the remarkable man he would become. His passion for baseball was evident from a young age, as he became the shortstop on the very first Andrews High School Baseball Team. His exceptional talent on the field caught the attention of major league scouts from the Giants and the Cardinals. Even though an injury prevented a professional career in baseball, his love for the game never waned, and he found joy in the sporting achievements of his family, particularly his granddaughter Mandy, who was the catcher on the First Andrews High School softball team.
In February of 1959, Johnny married the love of his life, Judy, in Phillips, Texas. Their partnership was filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures until her passing. The legacy of their love continued through their family, including their cherished grandchildren, Mandy Randolph and her wife, Emily Parks, and Chris Randolph and his wife, Mesha, all of Odessa, Texas. Johnny was a proud great-grandfather to Robert Parks, Johnathan Randolph, and Shelby Randolph, who brought him immense joy and happiness.
Johnny’s family was the center of his world, and he took every opportunity to be with his greatgrandchildren, whose activities and milestones were his greatest pride. His presence at family gatherings was a source of comfort and delight, as he shared stories, wisdom, and laughter with those he loved most.
Though Johnny was not particularly fond of the outdoors, he had a fondness for camping in his RV, embracing the opportunity to create lasting memories with his family. The paradox of his relationship with the outdoors was one of the many charming quirks that endeared him to his family and friends.
The Scarbrough family has lost a pillar of strength and love with Johnny’s passing. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Scarbrough; his parents, Raymond and Helen Scarbrough; his daughter, Debbie Gonzales; and his great-grandson, Caiden Randolph. The legacy of his kind spirit, however, will live on through the lives of those he touched.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Johnny’s life at 2:00PM, Friday, October 4, 2024, at The McNett Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Guy Crawford Officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Andrews County Old Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00PM7:00PM, Thursday, October 3, 2024, at McNett Funeral Home.
