Born on January 28, 1935, in San Augustine, Texas to Albert Carter and Jessie Cummings Carter. Joyce’s younger years were marked with hardships and heartache with the passing of her mother. She was shuffled between relatives. When she was 12, she found her forever home with her Uncle Elijah and Aunt Margaret Carter. These hardships shaped her into a very independent woman, with a very compassionate heart of service.

Ma Kettle, as she was fondly called, lived a life that was a testament to the virtues of faith, love, and joy. She walked through this world with a spirit that could light up the darkest room, with a heart so loving it could warm the coldest of days. Her faith was as steadfast as the ancient oak, unyielding in the face of life’s storms.
