The former county jail at the courthouse served its time as a law enforcement staple for decades here.
It held thousands of inmates in over 60 years of use, and in later years, passed state jail commission inspections largely because the state understood plans were in place to construct a new facility here.
The old jail on the second and third floors of the courthouse was replaced about a year ago by a new, single story facility in southeast Andrews.
On Tuesday, the commissioners court acted on a request from the sheriff’s office to decommission the former jail.
