Andrews County experienced a larger growth increase over the past 10 years than any other county in the area, according to recently released results from the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau.

Many perhaps believed Andrews County had surpassed 20,000 in population in recent years, but the recent census count— which involved residents filling out forms and the normal door-to-door effort hindered by COVID— showed otherwise.

The census revealed Andrews County’s population at 18,610, which is a substantial 25.9 percent increase from the previous census count in 2010.

Landgraf files bill that prohibits high-level waste in Texas

State Rep Brooks Landgraf filed a bill in the House this week that would prevent high-level radioactive waste from coming to Waste Control Specialists’ site in Andrews County.

Texas legislators are currently meeting in a second special session in Austin but still lack a quorum due to Democrats who left the state last month in an attempt to prolong the passage of election integrity legislation.

Landgraf said Tuesday most have returned and he expects a required twothirds quorum to be met during this session.

Andrews man arrested after shooting outside local residence

An ongoing verbal argument between two family members led to a Sunday afternoon shooting incident outside a northwest Andrews residence, according to police.

Thirty-six-year-old Adrian Gomez was shot once in his upper torso by a .40-caliber handgun at around 2:45 p.m., officers said.
