Man awarded recent judgment in suit claiming he was overserved alcohol is arrested for DWI

An Andrews man who last month was awarded $5.5 million through a lawsuit claiming he was overserved alcohol at La Fogata that led to injuries from a fight on premises was arrested Tuesday by police on a DWI charge.

Daniel Rawls is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated second after police pulled over the Dodge Durango he was driving in southwest Andrews.

Bond was set at $5,000 on Rawls, who remained in custody as of Tuesday evening, according to Andrews Jail records.

An Andrews man who led police on a high-speed vehicle chase through residential areas Saturday morning was eventually apprehended—but not until after he bailed out of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot as well.

A police Tahoe also sustained minor damage after the suspect vehicle backed into it after the suspect fled on foot, APD Lt. Brandi Schulze said.

Oscar Reyes Vasquez was eventually arrested and charged with evading arrest detention with a vehicle and evading arrest detention.

Active virus cases down in health department’s most recent update

Andrews County has now surpassed the 2,000 mark with confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began a year and a half ago, but the most recent update revealed a decrease in active cases for the first time in several weeks.

There were 89 active virus cases listed in the health department’s update last Friday, but the number decreased to 72 with Monday’s report. The primary reason for the decrease was numerous cases clearing, according to the health department’s numbers.

Based on information from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission, it appears local police contacted the state alcohol agency to look into the May 2019 incident at a local restaurant/bar that was the target of a civil lawsuit resulting in a recent large-sum default judgment.
