Highway wrecks result in minor injuries

A rollover accident Wednesday north of Andrews on U.S. Highway 385 resulted in minor injuries to the driver and two puppies in the SUV being taken to a local vet, according to authorities.

The crash occurred around five miles north of Andrews when the driver apparently lost control of the SUV and it skidded off the roadway before rolling and eventually coming to rest on its passenger side in pastureland.

Carter Keel of Andrews did more than okay at the Cinderella Pageant in Houston this past weekend. Carter, the daughter of Courtney and Brett Holly of Andrews, was named Photogenic Tiny Tot and was a cover girl finalist for the Texas State Pageant. Four-year old Carter is the granddaughter of Cecelia and Roy Holly, Channon and David Collier and Kelly and Hugh Keel all of Andrews.

The increased cost of building materials is beginning to impact various planned projects in numerous areas.

Included in the mix is Permian Regional Medical Center’s memory care facility that will adjoin the nursing home, hospital board members learned Thursday.

A representative from project construction manager—Trinity Hughes—is pushing back the groundbreaking date 30 days due to cost increases associated with building materials such as lumber, steel and other metal, according to hospital officials.

City council adopts Work Plan for 2022

The city council on Thursday adopted a Work Plan for 2022 that includes measures aimed at the city delivering exceptional service, upgrading essential infrastructure, ensuring economic viability and enhancing quality of life.

City officials said the city “will accomplish its vision” of being a “City of Excellence” by focusing on strategic objectives in the four aforementioned areas.

County seeks public input regarding high-level storage through survey

After a recent meeting in which several concerns were aired by community members and an oilfield company concerning the interim storage of spent fuel in Andrews County, the commissioners court is seeking public opinion on the matter.

The court, in 2016, provided a resolution of support for Waste Control Specialists’ license application through the federal government to store spent fuel at its site in far west Andrews County.

No restrictions on fireworks sales this year, but officials urge residents to use caution

Fireworks sales kicked off this week and will continue through midnight on Independence Day, according to county officials.

Though the county’s drought index number has increased as of late, there are no fireworks restrictions in place concerning sales, said Andrews County Emergency Management Coordinator/Fire Marshal Mike Cook.

Even so, there are the typical regulations and safety standards that need to be adhered to, according to Cook.

Fireworks sales began Thursday at two locations in Andrews County.
