Andrews man arrested for hit and run death

An Andrews man was arrested for murder Monday after he allegedly hit a woman with his SUV Sunday night in Ector County and left the scene.

Humberto Polanco, 35, was apprehended on an arrest warrant around 8 a.m. Monday at a residence in the 500 block of SE 1st St. in Andrews, according to authorities.

Polanco was wanted in connection with an auto-pedestrian incident on W. 16th St. in Ector County that claimed the life of 38-year-old Veronica Carrillo of Andrews.

Authorities said that Polanco and Carrillo had been living together in Andrews.

Vaccine on its way to PRMC

Permian Regional Medical Center was recently approved for a substantial vaccine allotment through the state that will not only cover all its frontline healthcare workers, but also local first responders, PRMC CEO Donny Booth said Monday.

Booth hoped the vaccine would arrive at the local hospital before Christmas.

PRMC was allotted 400 doses of Moderna’s vaccine, he said.

“We’re just waiting on the shipping,” Booth explained. “It was sent to the state from Moderna. As soon as we get it, we’ve already got policy set up.

PRCC experiences second virus death

The local nursing home experienced its second COVIDrelated death following a virus outbreak that began a couple of weeks ago, according to Permian Regional Medical Center CEO Donny Booth.

A Permian Residential Care Center resident with the virus died on Monday, Booth said.

There were also two more nursing home residents who tested positive, bringing the total to more than 40 of PRCC’s 60 residents.

But the good news is that some who contracted the virus were listed as recovered this week, according to Booth.

Court approves early tax payment discount by 3-1 vote

A discount for paying county taxes early will again be available to taxpayers next year after the commissioners court approved the action item Tuesday morning.

But like other years with potential to see declines in taxable value, the annual discount factor wasn’t a rubber-stamp approval without discussion.

The court voted 3-1 on the matter, with Andrews County Judge Charlie Falcon being the lone dissenting vote. Precinct 1 Commissioner Kerry Pack wasn’t at the meeting.

AMS All Region

The Texas Music Educators Association held the Junior High All-Region Choir Auditions virtually, for the first time ever, this year. Competing against over 20 schools, grades 7-9, 35 Andrews Middle School choir members qualified for the Region VI All-Region Choir.
