Census is looking to hire local residents

The U.S. Census Bureau is accepting applications from local residents for the upcoming 2020 count.

A variety of positions are available and they pay $15 per hour.

Those interested can apply online at 2020census.gov/jobsor call 1 855 562-2020.

“We want to make sure Andrews County has an accurate Census count in order to receive the necessary government funding for schools, roads, highways, state workforce programs and more in your area,” a representative with the Census Bureau said.

Fatality crashes increase on county roadways since May

The high-pitched tone outs on local first responders’ radios came at similar times around two weeks apart last month.

One call was received just after 4 a.m. and the other at 4:56 a.m.

The first fatal crash occurred on FM 1788 south of State Highway 176, while the second was on State Highway 115 east of Andrews.

The cause of both was the same—a driver, for unknown reason, had allowed a vehicle to veer across the center line into oncoming traffic.

In the first crash, a local woman died. The second claimed the life of a local man.

PRMC CEO is featured on cover of publication

The Rural Matters publication recently arrived at Permian Regional Medical Center with a surprise cover.

Well, perhaps it wasn’t too much of a shocker, but PRMC CEO Russell Tip-pin graced the cover with a business-like photo that came from the hospital’s website.

It pertained to Tippin receiving a prestigious award earlier this year from the Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals.

Andrews County has received over $12 million through WCS surcharge

The county recently received its third quarter payment from Waste Control Specialists concerning a five percent surcharge on gross receipts from the company’s Texas-Vermont Compact Landfill that disposes of low-level radioactive waste.

Though the check was the least amount this year, it pushed the county’s total to around $1.2 million in WCS funds for the year.

Andrews County Auditor Carol White said the June 30 payment from WCS amounted to $178,605, which was significantly down from the $314,151 check from March and the first quarter payment of $689,053.

Police investigate report of stolen gun from parked vehicle

Police investigated a report of a stolen firearm from a vehicle on June 15, according to police offense reports.

Officers received a call around 2:30 p.m. that day concerning a stolen hand gun.

The complainant told police that his wife went to the store the previous night to get a drink and returned home. She left again in the vehicle around 8:30 a.m. on June 15.

The couple didn’t notice the gun was missing until later that afternoon, according to the report.

AHS Choir Members compete at Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest

The UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest was held at Hendrickson HS in Pflugerville on June 3rd. 2 Madrigals earned a Division I – Superior Rating (Gold Medals), 5 soloists earned Division I – Superior Ratings (Gold Medals) and 6 soloists earned Division II – Excellent Ratings (Silver Medals). Students qualified for this competition by receiving a Division I rating on their Class I Solo or Ensemble at the regional contest in February.

Court approves WCS funding for local DAR project to honor late veterans

The commissioners court on Monday approved a Legacy Committee recommendation to provide Waste Control Specialists’ funding for a request from the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
