Council amends way hotel tax is allocated

One tell-tale sign of an improved oil economy is increases with the city’s hotel/motel occupancy tax figures.

Since last fiscal year, that tax revenue has skyrocketed, according to the city’s statistics.

It’s a benefit to the Andrews Chamber of Commerce, which receives the majority of the revenue.

The chamber collects 80 percent of the revenue and the city gets the other 20 percent.

There are also requirements that a percentage of the tax revenue must be spent for marketing purposes to put “heads in beds,” city officials said.

The jury trial Monday in 109th District Court involving an arson case appeared to be the real deal.

But, in reality, it was staged to give a dozen or so high school seniors participating in National County Government Day a feel for the various aspects of courtroom procedures involved with such a trial.

After all, some of them are already registered to vote and could be summoned at some point in the future. Others will soon reach that point when they turn 18.

Hotel project aim is to decrease demand for workforce lodging

The demand definitely exists for hotel room capacity in Andrews.

With oilfield activity buzzing, accommodations seem to always be at a premium.

The need for more rooms was a primary reason for a new extended stay hotel project being constructed in northwest Andrews, the building superintendent said Tuesday afternoon.

The 80-room Eagle’s Bend extended stay hotel should open sometime in June, according to Carl Woodruff of Langston Construction Inc.

Wild, Wild West Fest should draw ‘em in

The much anticipated Wild, Wild West Fest (WWWF) is geared toward celebrating the diverse culture and heritage of the Wild West. It should be all that and more.

The chamber of commerce’s annual multiple-day event runs Friday and Saturday at the Andrews County Expo Arena.

“Hopefully, this is going to be one of the best ones we’ve had,” Andrews Chamber of Commerce spokesperson Mel Coomer said Tuesday.

There will, no doubt, be something for everyone at the event, which is one of the chamber’s largest productions.
