Safe Spot Halloween Carnival is tonight

The Andrews Chamber of Commerce’s annual Sa fe Spot Trick or Treating and Halloween Carnival is set for the ACE Arena Wednesday night.

The event will run from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will include carnival booths, face painting, cake walks, jumpers, photo booths, food and goodies.

The family event is expected to provide fun for all ages.

There is no admission cost.

Costumes should be in good taste. Offensive or inappropriate costumes will not be allowed and those wearing them will be asked to leave.

MEMORIAL

Joe Brown had a role with nearly every vintage vehicle that arrived outside the First Baptist Church Monday before his funeral service.

Brown, an avid vintage vehicle restorer and collector, worked on most of the cars and trucks lined up in front of the church facility. Some of them were his—including a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria.

Longtime friends and family members parked the vehicles for the memorial service and staged a processional after it in honor of Brown, who died Friday in Odessa at the age of 76.

Neo experienced sentimental time with family before tragic accident

TRAGIC INCIDENT

Neo Calvert learned of special sentimental family experiences from his childhood just days before the tragic vehicle crash that claimed his life last week.

Calvert, a 2018 Andrews High School graduate who died Oct. 23 from injuries he sustained in an accident while traveling to work in Midland, was described by family members as a very caring and giving person.

His father, Gene Calvert, died when Neo was young, according to Neo’s step-father and step-mother, Saul and Yadira Lopez.

Turnout is solid for early voting period

The early voting period for the Nov. 6 General Election is about to end and has perhaps exceeded expectations concerning local voter turnout, according to county officials.

With just two early voting days remaining—it ends Friday—Andrews County had nearly 1,800 voters visit the polls, Andrews County Election Administrator Gracie Mendoza said.

It’s probably safe to say the final early voting turnout will exceed 2,000. For a mid-term election year with no local contested races, the voter numbers have been impressive, according to Mendoza.

Deputy hire gets SO closer to being fully staffed

A deputy position filled Monday moved the sheriff’s office closer to being fully staffed with officers—a challenge the department has faced due to salary competition from other law enforcement agencies and the oilfield.

The commissioners court approved the hiring of Ryan Tayler as a deputy sheriff at the Level II rate of $25.42 per hour plus $500 per month certification pay.

“Ryan went to work today,” Andrews County Judge Richard Dolgener noted of the effective hiring date of Monday.
