An Andrews Mustangs football team, stuck in a four-team district, ended up with the most overall selections when the heavily populated 2-4A All-District picks were released this week.

Right!

And playing one of the best teams in the state of Texas only magnified the situation.

The Andrews Lady Mustangs basketball team committed 46 turnovers which led to 60 points Tuesday in Levelland in a 94-19 loss that was hard to take.

To be honest, it didn’t matter what high school team showed up to play Levelland this night – they were going to lose.

As a team, Levelland made 30 of 40 two-point shots and was 6 of 12 on threes.

That’s incredibly hard to beat.

Doesn’t matter the league or the age -- not all teams can be super bowl champions!

That was not the case for the third and fourth grade Andrews Mustangs after beating the Howard County Broncos 20-7 in the championship game of the D-II, Permian Basin Youth Football League last week.

After losing just one game all season, the local boys entered the playoffs and ran all over Greenwood, 42-0, in the first round before getting a 22-7 revenge win over a Pecos team that handed them their only loss of the season.

Things can only get better!

With the football boys in the gym just one day, the Andrews Mustangs took on a good Levelland squad in their home gym Tuesday and thanks to a 23-14 fourth quarter advantage, came up short by a competitive 52-46 margin.

The Mustangs were outscored in each of the first three quarters by margins of 8-7, 11-10 and 19-6 before their fourth quarter run made things interesting.

McDonald is Pigskin Pick ‘em winner

Pam McDonald was the winner of the newspaper’s final Pigskin Pick ‘em Contest.

McDonald outdistanced the prognosticating pack by missing only four contests the final week.

For garnering top honors, McDonald received the top $75 cash prize.

McDonald missed three games in the collegiate ranks and one in the NFL.

Her misses in college games included Washington’s upset over Washington State, Texas A&M over LSU and Boise over Utah State.

In the NFL, she missed Denver over Pittsburgh.

Thanksgiving at Disney World

ALL-AMERICAN

Julia Cargill and her family experienced a surreal Thanksgiving holiday last week.

Cargill, an Andrews High freshman cheerleader, performed in the All-American Thanksgiving Parade at Disney World in sunny Orlando, Florida on turkey day.

The event consisted of All-American cheerleaders performing routines during a mile-long parade through the Magic Kingdom theme park. Thousands were in attendance.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

The lights at night were big and bright…deep in the heart of Texas.

Friday night’s Christmas Light extravaganza in Andrews lived up to its billing, according to event organizers.

The festivities kicked off with the annual Rockin’ Jingle Bell Christmas Light Parade before moving to the Christmas Light Show on NW Ave. D.

Hundreds turned out to view the various colored lights that came in numerous forms.

Company proposes a spendy transmission line project

A Lubbock utilities company is proposing a $20 million transmission line project in southwest Andrews County, according to a public notice appearing in this edition.

Sharyland Utilities L.P. hopes to construct a single-circuit, 345-kilovolt electric transmission line from a present switchyard to a new one it would build, the notice states.

In all, the project would be approximately 10.3 miles long and constructed primarily on monopole structures in a right of way approximately 175 feet wide, according to the notice.

WTI crude oil trades below $50

West Texas Intermediate crude prices hit lows this week that haven’t been seen in more than a year.

At one point Thursday, WTI was actually trading below $50 a barrel, according to Markets Insider. The $49.47 trading price early Thursday was listed as a 52-week low.

It’s been well over a year since WTI dipped under the $50 range, but prices rose to over $52 a barrel before trading closed Thursday.
