Tijerina is Defensive POY; Mustangs end up with 10 on 2-4A All-District teams

District record wise -- the Andrews Mustangs were the second-best team in District 2-4A.

Players wise, Andrews tied league champs Seminole with the most players recognized to the 2-4A All-District team with 10.

While Seminole had the most superlative award winners with three (Preston Stevenson, Kaycen Andrews, Cuylar Cramer), Andrews landed junior catcher Brock Tijerina as the Defensive Player of the Year plus Monahans’ Bradden Kesey was the Offensive Player of the Year.

First-ever Lions Parent/Child 2-day golf event is June 26/27

The first-annual Andrews Lions Club Parent and Child golf classic will be held here June 26 and 27.

The format will allow any kind of parent and child format whether it is a boy, a girl or a kinfolk.

“Our annual Lions Club tourney has been lodged in between a couple of big tournaments over the last few years and we have just not been able to get a good turnout,” said Lions member Pete Francis. “Thus, we talked about it plus discussed with local pro Tommy Darland and we will be doing the first annual Parent/Child golf tournament.

Nickel makes All-American squad

Karsyn Nickel of Andrews is a very good athlete pretty much anywhere on a softball diamond.

Actually Nickel, an incoming fifth grader in the Andrews school system is more than pretty good.

A while back, Karsyn, the daughter of Robin and Mark Nickel of Andrews, took part in the All-American Fast-pitch tryouts in San Angelo for the South Region. Her talent must have opened a lot of eyes.

Local oil economy is on upswing as evidenced by sales tax allocation

If sales tax is a reflection of the local economy—which nearly everyone agrees that it is—then Andrews County is regaining momentum following a downturn bolstered by the virus pandemic and ensuing oil bust.

Oil prices are hitting highs that haven’t been experienced in more than two years, which is perhaps the primary reason recent sales tax rebate checks have been on the rise.

West Texas Intermediate crude closed at over $70 a barrel earlier this week—it ended at $70.05 on Tuesday and traded as high as $70.62 Wednesday—to reveal that perhaps an upswing has been cemented.

Andrews’ streak of 100-degree days hits six

Friday was so hot someone could fry an egg on the sidewalk.

It was perhaps one of those days where it was good to be inside near air conditioning.

It also explains why many local residents were heading to area lakes for the weekend. That’s one way to beat the heat—get to where there is some water.

The official temperature hit 107 degrees Friday afternoon and possibly went higher to culminate a five-day stretch of triple digit weather in Andrews.

A brief reprieve with a return to the 90s is expected beginning early next week and will continue several days.
