The impact Lindsey Horton had on healthcare and on people, in general, lives on.

That fact was evident with a recent fundraiser to provide scholarships to young students heading into the healthcare field.

The Lindsey Horton Memorial Scholarship Fund recipients were recently announced, including seven from Andrews, according to Permian Regional Medical Center representatives.

A golf tournament staged in mid-May to benefit the scholarship fund exceeded everyone’s expectations, according to hospital officials.

Sandhills Beef Cattle Conference set July 7 in Monahans

It was the type of alarming phone call in the middle of the night that no father ever wants to receive.

Andrews resident Jerry Aranda learned in January his oldest son had been shot multiple times.

It was also the beginning of a nearly five-month journey that has increased the family’s faith in God, according to Jerry.

Jacoby Aranda, 18, who sustained gunshot wounds to the head and arm after an alleged robbery attempt and ensuing fight, endured lengthy medical and rehab stays in Lubbock and Colorado. For a while, the family didn’t know if Jacoby would pull through.

COVID-related deaths decrease substantially in recent months

The obvious deduction with less COVID cases the past couple of months is fewer virus-related deaths.

That has been the case since vaccines began being administered to the masses this year, healthcare experts said. The death a numbers are on downward spiral.

Sharp decreases in COVID deaths have been experienced locally, regionally, statewide and across the United States in recent weeks, according to healthcare officials and reports.

It’s a stark contrast to last year and even the first month of 2021, the numbers reveal.

Project to address drainage issues impacting section of Andrews Loop

The city will soon address the lone non-intersection portion of Andrews Loop 1910 that was identified with deteriorating asphalt pavement during an engineer’s study just over two years ago, according to city officials.

The culprit in the SW Loop 1910 stretch requiring work is a longtime drainage problem that will also be fixed, Andrews City Manager Steve Eggleston said.

Work on the dual project is scheduled to start early next week, the city manager added.

Diaz crowned as this year’s Ms. West Texas

Modeling was nothing new to Adriana Diaz, who has worked in the past with photographers and boutiques.

But pageantry was a different ballgame for Diaz.

It didn’t take long for the 27-year-old Andrews resident to catch on, so to speak.

In her first official pageant—the Miss West Texas Pageant last month in Odessa—Diaz was crowned Ms. West Texas.

It was quite an honor, said Diaz, the daughter of Pilar and Juanita Gandara.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate her life at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 10, 2021 at the McNett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Josh Morris officiating. Interment was at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Natchez, Mississippi. Visitation was Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home.
