Man who briefly eludes deputies and throws out drugs is apprehended

An Andrews man was arrested on Sunday after leading deputies on a brief vehicle chase and throwing a lunchbox containing illegal drugs out of the window after pulling into a residence, according to a probable cause arrest report.

Harvey has great all-around outing at the ASCO All-Star game

Recent Andrews High School graduate Ranger Harvey was one of the keys to the AHS Mustangs defense this past season. He was a mainstay at defensive end! Once the Andrews football season was over with a big-district loss, Harvey figured he had put on the ‘black and gold’ Mustangs attire he’d worn the last four years for the last time. Not so! Not only did Harvey wear it one more time, he shined as a member of the Red team, led by Seminole Indians head coach Greg Poyner and his football staff, at the 19th annual ASCO All-Star Classic held at Lowery Field in Lubbock Saturday, June 1. In a competitive, seniors-only game that ended in a 14-14 tie, Ranger, the son of Valerie and Tom Harvey of Andrews, had seven tackles, one pass hurry that resulted in an interception and two huge tackles at the goal line. The six-foot Harvey was not the only Mustang invited to play in the ASCO All-Star Classic with QB Aidyn Olivas also getting an invite but Olivas is playing summer baseball and could not participate. Only four players from District 3-4A took part in the all-star game as members of the Red team including Harvey and three Seminole Indians in Brian Peters, Jaylen Cottrell and Kevyn Guffey. The Blue squad had two players from 3-4A in Estacado’s Nate Orta and DeeOndric Green. The mission of the ASCO All-Star Classic is to provide financial assistance to young players that have been permanently injured while playing or practicing the game of football. The Andrews football program has one more football player competing in an all-star game with Julian Valenzuela set to participate in the Midland All-Star game on Saturday, June 15

Lawhon, Ramos selected to play in Greater West Texas All-Star game

Most athletes might not feel that way ‘while in the moment,’ but as the years pass it is extremely hard to let go of their high school athletic years. Completely understandable! That being said, two recent May graduates, Sassy Ramos and Harmony Lawhon, will get to wear the ‘Black and Gold’ representing Andrews High School one more time when they compete in the Greater West Texas Softball All-Star game Friday in Frenship. Both Lawhon and Ramos will be on the South team, coached by Canyon Randall head coach Michael Collins and Ty Hoobler. Also on the South team are Danae Lopez of Amarillo, Taylor Terrazas and Rylee O’Brien of Monterey, Kynleigh Kirby of Pampa, Brenna Edwards of Canyon, Frenship’s Ava Garcia and Nevaeh Carranza, Lauren Garcia of Canyon Randall and Angelica Gonzalez of Levelland. The East verses West 1A to 3A all-star game will start at 5 p.m. and the North vs. South all-star game for athletes from 4A to 6A is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Lawhon was a first-team All-District first baseman while Ramos ended up with second team All-District recognition. Lawhon hit .214 in district with four singles, one double and one home run. Ramos batted .231 with one single and two doubles.
