Derek Hernandez, Jasson Marquez named All-State Cross Country by MileSplit Texas

The Andrews Mustangs Cross Country team ended up as the second best 4A boys’ team in the state of Texas.

By less than a second!

The two main cogs in Coach Wade Floyd’s team, Derek Hernandez and Jasson Marquez, were honored this past week by being named to the 4A All-State Cross Country team by MileSplit Texas.

Hernandez, a freshman, earned second-team All-State honors, while Marquez, a junior, earned a spot in the Honorable Mention selections.

Leach leads AHS boys to 2-2 tourney record

The Andrews Mustangs settled for a two-wins and two-losses overall record while competing in the annual Wildcat Classic in Littlefield Thursday through Saturday. Andrews suffered a 55-49 defeat to Roosevelt right out of the box Thursday but came back Friday and beat Happy 56-40. The Mustangs fell to Sundown in their nightcap contest 49-46 before finishing the tournament with a solid 91-38 win over Spring Lake Earth behind 41 points from junior guard Brett Leach.

Five Mustangs earn football honors

A grand total of five members of the 2018 Andrews Mustangs football team earned some sort of award during the holiday postseason awards.

Four of the five recognized, including senior defensive end and linebacker Jacob Mechler and senior offensive lineman Reece Azam, junior quarterback Brett Leach and sophomore wideout Markeese Lawrence, were selected to both the All-Permian Basin and 2018 Football All-Stars squad. Also, AHS junior linebacker Esau Flores was named to the top team in the Midland Reporter-Telegram All-Star selections.

In their two prior games, the Andrews Lady Mustangs basketball team had played two excellent second halves to at least have something to build on.

First, they outplayed 6A Odessa High in the last two quarters to keep the game competitive and then they went ‘basketball crazy’ in the second half at Big Spring to get their biggest win of the season.

In their last game before the holiday break, coach Annie McKee’s girls went completely backwards against 6A Permian, playing a good first half and a poor second half.
