It has been just over a year since the new jail/sheriff’s office facility in southeast Andrews opened its doors, and so far, the single-level building has made a noticeable difference in everything from meeting current policy requirements to cost savings, according to county officials.

The difference between the former 60-year old jail building at the courthouse is like night and day, Andrews County Sheriff Rusty Stewart said.

That fact was evident when the $28-million facility opened in late October of 2020.

Adult Literacy program reaches milestone year

Since the mid-1980s, the Andrews Adult Literacy program has provided a pivotal community service, ranging from English language learning and citizenship preparation to reading skills and GED achievement.

Thousands have been assisted through the program over the years, while the community, as a whole, has benefitted with its results.

The Andrews Adult Literacy program is celebrating its 35th anniversary this month after initially opening its doors in December of 1986.

Three more file for candidacy in March election

Several candidates threw their hats into the ring during the final week of the filing period for the March Primary.

The result will be two contested races for the three open seats on the commissioners court, while incumbents will run unopposed for the other county positions appearing on the March 1 ballot.

The three candidates who filed the final week will run in the Republican primary, according to Andrews County Republican Chair Randy Rowe.

Andrews County surpasses 3,000 confirmed virus cases in health department’s latest update

Andrews County surpassed a significant level of overall COVID cases in the health department’s latest report concerning statistical information.

The number of total confirmed cases since the virus pandemic began here in late March of 2020 exceeded 3,000 in the health department’s Dec. 13 update posted on the county’s social media page.

Even so, the county’s active case and new case numbers are down from a slight increase listed in the previous report.

Ocotillo Garden Club Yard of the Month

The Ocotillo Garden Club awarded Dan and Pam Fisher the Yard of the Month for the summer. Their home is located at 35 Prairie Lane. As you drive through the gates, you come upon a cozy courtyard with hanging baskets of petunias in various colors, and vibrantly colored hibiscus trees. This is the perfect setting for your morning cup of coffee. Shade is provided by three red oaks and ten live oak trees lining the property on each side.

AHS Choir: TMEA Area Candidates

The Texas Music Educators Association held the Pre-Area Small School Choir auditions on Saturday, November 5.

13 Andrews High School choir students advanced to the next round of auditions. They will audition for the Texas All-State Choir on January 8, at Legacy High School in Midland. They will be competing against singers from the Midland/Odessa, Amarillo, Lubbock, and El Paso areas.
