Mohr provides unmatched tenure as school trustee

When it comes to school board service, not many—if any—could come close to matching the longevity of Dr. Charles Mohr.

Mohr, who attended his final board meeting Tuesday, has served as a school trustee over three decades.

He served a whopping eight terms on the Andrews ISD School Board. The math equates to 24 years total!

It could be the longest school board tenure ever in Andrews.

Contractor is approved for demolition of annex facility

The school board on Tuesday approved a contractor for asbestos abatement and demolition of the longtime Andrews Middle School annex located across from the school facility on NW 3rd St.

Most recently, the annex facility was used for gym space by county youth programs and others. Also, the high school’s alternative education program— Andrews Education Center—and the disciplinary program—AEDP—were housed in the annex.

But the AEC and AEDP have since been moved to the new middle school expansion facility across from the middle school.

Overpass project gaining steam

Road travelers using one of the county’s most dangerous highway intersections can’t help but notice the work being done there, that once completed, will vastly improve safety.

An overpass project at State Highway 176 and Farm-to-Market Road 1788 approximately 10 miles east of Andrews that began a year ago is rapidly progressing, according to a Texas Department of Transportation spokesman.

That’s good news to frequent travelers there, and to law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel who routinely cover crashes at the intersection.

Andrews man arrested for fifth time this year, sixth since last November

An Andrews man who police arrested three times in March was again apprehended Monday on warrants and for breaking into vehicles, according to police.

This time, Jorddy Villegas was picked up by officers who observed him on foot in southeast Andrews Monday night and realized he had outstanding warrants for possession of a controlled substance, unlawfully carrying a weapon and theft of a firearm.

Villegas was also found with various documents on his person he allegedly stole from vehicles, police said.

He was charged with two counts of burglary of vehicles.

Netopski would like to bring different perspective to Andrews City Council

Chris Netopski would like to bring a fresh perspective to the city council.

Netopski, who has lived in Andrews with his family for several years, is originally from the East Coast.

“We’ve been in Andrews four years and lived in Rankin for three years before that,” he said. “I grew up in Connecticut, but my wife is from Big Lake. That’s what brought us out seven years ago.

“I would like to be a voice of a person (on the council) who hasn’t lived in Andrews their whole life,” he added. “I’d like to provide a different (perspective).”

Two-vehicle accident results in injuries to driver major damage

An Andrews woman sustained injuries in a two-vehicle crash the morning of March 26 at the intersection of SW 5th St. and Broadway, according to police.

The 7:26 a.m. accident involved a 2005 Ford being driven by 33-year-old Laura Salcido of Andrews and a 2011 Ford F-250 being driven by 33-yearold Ramon Christopher Hernandez of Portales, New Mexico.

Police said the wreck occurred when Salcido was traveling north in the 100 block of SW 5th St. and stopped at the stop sign, while Hernandez was heading east in the 500 block of W. Broadway with the right of way.
