An Andrews man who was arrested last August after a domestic incident and later ordered a passenger in his vehicle to throw a handgun out of the window when police initiated a traffic stop was recently sentenced to prison.

Safe & Save Winners

The #arrivealivePB competition to encourage drivers to focus on the road instead of technology (sponsored by Chevron and Safe2save) competition is over and representatives came to AHS to present the Student Council with a giant check. The contest ran from January 29 to March 29 with weekly prizes of $75 awarded to one AHS student, one AISD teacher and one Andrews community member. Names were drawn by Safe2save from drivers who maintained a driving score of 95 or better for the week.

City council approves resolution that will honor seven Andrews soldiers who gave ultimate sacrifice

With Memorial Day fast approaching in just over a month, a prominent roadway in Andrews will be dedicated to local soldiers who provided the ultimate sacrifice for their country and town.

The city council on Thursday approved a resolution to designate State Highway 176 within the city limits (Broadway) as a Memorial Highway.

City officials said the designation comes at a time when the Veterans Memorial at the chamber of commerce grounds off W. Broadway is undergoing improvements through the Legacy Park project that should be completed by Memorial Day.

Wiggins one of three candidates running for two seats on board

As it is now, Mindy Wiggins is involved in various school-related organizations and services.

Wiggins, a mother of two school-aged children, also hopes to add school board member to that list.

She is among three candidates running for two open seats on the school board during the May 1 election.

Incumbent Joe Jerren Barnes is seeking a second term, while political newcomers Wiggins and Xavier Emiliano are also in the race.

Longtime school board member Charlie Mohr opted against seeking another term.

Pfluger touches on border crisis at his first town hall in Andrews

First-term U.S. Congressman August Pfluger staged his initial town hall in Andrews Tuesday, mostly discussing opposition to and concerns with the current presidential administration’s policies.

At the topical forefront was the southern border crisis, while Pfluger—who represents Texas’ conservative 11th Congressional District—also hit some on the Second Amendment and President Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure bill.

Man who escaped law enforcement custody outside PRMC receives 20-year sentence

A man who briefly escaped law enforcement custody after being treated at the local hospital last September was recently sentenced to a lengthy prison term during a district court hearing, according to a disposition report from the district clerk’s office.

Jeffery Samuel Garcia received a total of 20 years in the Texas Department of Corrections based on separate 10-year sentences for escape from custody while arrested/ confined and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, district court records revealed.

Board to consider contractor for demolition of middle school annex

The school board on Tuesday will consider approving a contractor for asbestos abatement and demolition of the longtime Andrews Middle School annex located across from the school facility on NW 3rd St.

Most recently, the annex facility been used for gym space by county youth programs and others. Also, the high school’s alternative education program—Andrews Education Center—and the disciplinary program—AEDP—were housed in the annex.

But the AEC and AEDP have since been moved to the new middle school expansion facility across from the middle school.
