The county’s new pay and longevity scales—approved Tuesday by the commissioners court—will result in less longevity pay to some longtime employees, according to county officials.

But on the pay scale side, no employee will make less than what they’re currently earning through the present format.

The new scales will go into effect next budget year and replace outdated ones in which pay steps maxed after six years and longevity pay was not capped and required over $405,000 from the county coffers this year.

Police locate large amount of cocaine in man’s truck

A San Elizario, Texas, man is facing a drug-related charge following a routine traffic stop in Andrews Wednesday night.

Police discovered a large amount of cocaine in the back seat area of a Dodge pickup following the 8 p.m. traffic stop in the 200 block of NW Ave. I and arrested the driver, according to Andrews Police Chief Ronny McCarver.

Rodrigo Estrada-Lopez was transported to the Andrews County Jail following the incident and was charged with possession of a controlled substance Penalty Group 1 between four and 200 grams.

Many productive oilfield-related businesses and other longtime companies have been adversely impacted by a double whammy involving the novel coronavirus and a subsequent downturn in the oil economy felt extremely hard in April.

The situation forced many longtime companies—such as Kirby and Palmer of Texas—to furlough or lay off employees at that time.

Palmer Tank, which has employed more than 100 in the past, actually closed its operation in April due to the adverse conditions, according to Andrews Economic Development Corporation Director Morse Haynes.

More than 50 new virus cases appear in Andrews County in less than a week

The virus numbers continued to surge over the week, with 23 new cases reported on Friday alone.

Since the beginning of the week, 52 more tested positive for COVID-19, which is by far the largest amount of new cases during any week since Andrews’ first reported case in early April.

Permian Regional Medical Center CEO Donny Booth said test numbers have also substantially increased in recent weeks.
