Sure, it’s important to reflect on the historic, infamous day known as 9-11.

America will always remember.

But another area of emphasis of Patriot Day/Remember 9-11 this year at the middle school included what transpired after the incident.

Kristan Sweatt still recalls the teacher’s loud scream that day.

The serious tone in the educator’s voice lingers in Sweatt’s mind.

It was Sweatt’s initial sensory experience from the tragic incident that shocked the nation nearly 20 years ago.

“I remember a teacher throwing the door open and screaming our country is under attack,” Sweatt recalled.

Sweatt was a sixth grader at Andrews Middle School on Sept. 11, 2001—the morning America was jolted by the terroristic attacks on the Twin Towers and other areas.

Landgraf discusses shooting, not running for Congress

During a visit to Andrews Tuesday, State Rep. Brooks Landgraf told constituents about his decision not to run for Congress and discussed the state’s plans to combat mass shooting incidents after Texas (Odessa-Midland, El Paso) experienced two within a short period of time.

Landgraf announced earlier this week he will seek re-election to a third term as state rep, rather than filing to run for the congressional seat being vacated by longtime U.S. Congressman Mike Con-away.

City could pursue suit against hotel for delinquent taxes

The city council was scheduled to meet in executive session Thursday to discuss options with recouping thousands of dollars in delinquent tax money from a local hotel, according to city officials.

But a lack of a quorum resulted in the meeting being cancelled, Andrews City Manager Steve Eggleston said Thursday afternoon.

A&E Hotel (Holiday Inn Express) on S. Main St. has thousands of dollars in delinquent hotel occupancy taxes it owes the city, according to city officials.

City’s finance director steps down from role

After more than a year in the position, City of Andrews Finance Director Kevin Rule stepped down from the role earlier this week, according to city officials.

In recent weeks, Rule accepted a similar position at a city in the San Antonio area, Andrews City Manager Steve Eggleston said. Eggleston, who served as the city’s finance director for eight years prior to taking over the city manager role in July of 2018, will now assume both positions during the interim period, he said.

Trustees approve proposal to build food pantry facility

The school board on Tuesday approved a contractor proposal for construction of a new Andrews Food Pantry facility in southwest Andrews, according to school officials.

The action came after Teinert Construction slightly scaled back its initial proposal of $1.083 million that was opened just prior to the August school board meeting.

At the August meeting, trustees felt the proposal was too much for what was budgeted in county financing from Waste Control Specialists’ funding approved for the project.
