City is looking to spur interest in volunteerism

A community can’t seemingly thrive without behind the scenes type work that possibly is unbeknownst to many.

Volunteer efforts through numerous citizens are necessary for the success of numerous events and programs. The volunteer opportunities come in a wide range of tasks and assistance.

City officials are seeking to increase volunteerism within the community and recently unveiled a program to accomplish that ambition.

CAR SHOW

The word has apparently gotten out concerning West Texas Finest’s 5th annual Grill & Chill car show.

Typically, the show is a great draw for some spectacular vehicles from throughout Texas and other areas.

This year should be no different, anticipates West Texas Finest Car Club President Jerry Sanchez.

They’re expecting a good turnout for the Saturday, Oct. 12 event at Lakeside Park.

Sanchez believes. It could be their best show ever.

Board to consider terminating AMS choir director’s contract

The school board on Tuesday will discuss two personnel items in executive session pertaining to Monday’s arrest of the Andrews Middle School choir director on a child pornography charge, according to the meeting agenda.

One item could lead to potentially terminating the contract of 59-year-old Gary Ragland, who has worked in the AMS choir director role for around 20 years.

Ragland was arrested Monday after law enforcement investigators allegedly discovered child pornography “on one of his electronic devices,” according to police.

Robert and Carolyn Hulen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last month.

But the longtime Andrews jewelry business with which the two have become synonymous over the years dates back further.

Hulen’s Jewelry—which opened in Andrews in the mid-1950s by Robert’s father, Lee Hulen—could be classified as a rare jewel of sorts.

Few rural town jewelry stores anywhere can match Hulen’s longevity.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week—scheduled for Oct. 6-12—has a catchy theme with rhyme.

The theme content and what it represents could also be instrumental with saving lives in the event of a fire, those with the National Fire Protection Association believe.

The NFPA came up with “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”

After conducting some business and greeting new members, six ladies were honored for their years of dedication to Texas Retired Teachers Association. Private water well screening set for Oct . 21 in Andrews

The Texas Well Owner Network is hosting a water well screening Oct. 21 in Andrews to give area residents the opportunity to have their well water screened.

The screening will be from 8:30–10 a.m. at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office for Andrews County, 851 E. Broadway St.

A meeting explaining screening results will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Andrews Community Building, 200 NW Mustang Drive in Andrews.
