Court approves proposed tax rate that is lower than this year’s adopted rate

The commissioners court on Monday approved a proposed tax rate for the coming fiscal year that I slower than this year’s adopted rate.

Two public hearings have been set in early September to allow citizens to provide input on the proposed rate of 0.5099.

The proposed tax rate is slightly under the rollback rate of 0.5107 that includes a slight interest and sinking tax rate to pay off $18 million in bond debt from the new jail/sheriff’s office facility project now under construction.

It’s the first time in years county taxpayers will see an I&S rate.

Speed plays factor in fatal crash Monday on FM 181

A New Mexico man died Monday in an early morning vehicle crash north of State Highway 176 on FM 181, according to the investigating Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

Jesus Luna, who was in his early 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:30 a.m. accident by Andrews County Justice of the Peace Mary Jane Baeza, DPS Trooper Tomas Barrientos said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of FM 181 and NW County Road 9250 and involved a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Luna.

Andrews High School student John Garcia wants to connect local residents with the power of prayer.

The AHS senior has come up with a plan to his achieve that ambition. It started with Garcia going through the state to register a non-profit organization known as Ambassadors of Prayer.

On Monday, Garcia went before the commissioners court with a request to set up prayer boxes at several local parks and at the courthouse.

Landgraf deciding whether to run for Congress

With Mike Conaway’s announcement late last month that he will not run for reelection to an ninth term in Congress, names are beginning to surface as possible District 11 candidates.

Conaway has served in Congress since 2005, representing a very conservative district that includes Andrews County. District voters—based on their longstanding conservative trends—will almost assuredly send another Republican into office.

Some area politicians and others have said they’re considering running.
