High speed chase leads to crash-out, critical injuries

VEHICLE PURSUIT

A brief high speed pursuit on Christmas night resulted in the suspect vehicle crashing out and a passenger sustaining critical injuries, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

The front seat passenger, 20-year-old Trinidad Leal, was ejected when the suspect vehicle rolled multiple times, DPS Trooper Zach Boerjan said. Leal, who apparently was not wearing a seat belt, was flown to a medical center in Odessa following the 10:15 p.m. accident.

Staring in the face of adversity following the loss of her home on Dec. 23, Sharon Gaines was still counting her blessings on Christmas.

Gaines was thankful her family members were okay—though boyfriend Justin Perry was burned badly in the mobile home fire—and for the outpouring of community support following the ordeal.

The 5 a.m. blaze destroyed the trailer at 210 NW 4th St. where Gaines and her family have lived the past two years.

The timing of a fire is never good, but this one was especially heart-wrenching.

Roadway deaths are down in county in 2018

Though it seemed there were numerous major vehicle crashes in Andrews County this year, fatality numbers from wrecks were significantly down from the previous year, according to authorities. With several days remaining in 2018, it appeared the county might avoid double digit totals with crash fatality figures.

There were nine deaths on county roadways as of Dec. 28.

That figure is less than half of the numbers from the previous year, according to authorities.

In 2017, there were 20 deaths on county roadways.

The nearly completed 2018 included times of change and growth for Andrews County. It hardly seems 2018 is coming to an end. In other words, time seems to have flown by this year.

Gray honored for 32 years with APD

Andrews Assistant Police Chief Kim Gray has always been known for a steely exterior that earned him monikers like “Iron Lieutenant.”

But the “Iron Man’ nickname could also pertain to Gray’s longevity with the Andrews Police Department. Gray has been with the APD 32 years.

He started as a patrolman way back when, was promoted to the lieutenant rank more than 25 years ago and has filled the assistant chief role the past year.

Gray was honored Friday afternoon for his long tenure that will come to a close at the end of the month.

WTI oil trades in the $40s
