Golf course irrigation replacement project will begin in mid-January

A $1.64 million project to re-irrigate the county golf course will begin in two weeks following commissioners court action Monday.

The court officially approved a contract with Heritage Links of Houston for the installation of the irrigation system that should vastly improve quality.

Andrews County Parks Director Justin Cheyne said the present irrigation system is 50 years old and lacking in many aspects.

Heritage Links will begin the replacement project on Jan. 15, according to Cheyne.

County’s newly elected officials take oath of office on New Year’s

The county’s newly elected officials took the oath of office during the Jan. 1 tradition Tuesday in the district court room on the second floor of the courthouse.

There were some new faces being sworn in and others entering another term.

Tuesday’s swearing in ceremony was attended by a large New Year’s audience in the court room.

Many in attendance were family members or friends of county officials taking office.

The Top six stories in Andrews County for 2018 range from the oil economy swing to the approval of a new jail.

It was an eventful year for Andrews County.

It marked the end of an era, so to speak, for key leadership positions within governing entities. A change in city manager occurred in July and a new county judge was elected in March.

Andrews County also experienced major growth in 2018—as evidenced by record enrollment numbers for the

school district that serve as a reflection of the county’s population.

Pool moves from legal career to judicial realm

The shoe is now on the other foot for longtime local attorney John Pool.

After a lengthy law career with stints as the county attorney, city attorney and in private practice, Pool is switching into the judicial realm.

Pool was elected as the 109th District Judge during the March primary election. He is replacing former 109th District Judge Martin Muncy, who decided against running for a third term.

Pool took the oath of office Tuesday morning in the district court room at the courthouse. His legal work has provided insight into the judicial arena, he said.

Man involved in rollover wreck is paralyzed from chest down

An Andrews man injured in a rollover accident following a high speed vehicle pursuit with a law enforcement officer on Christmas day remains in critical condition at a Lubbock medical center, according to a social media site.

Twenty-year-old Trinidad Leal, a passenger in a 2006 Ford Mustang that crashed out on SE Andrews Loop 1910, underwent emergency surgery and is “paralyzed from his chest down,” a GoFundMe fund-raiser page created Dec. 31 for Leal stated.

The Dow Jones has rallied 1400 points off its Wednesday intraday low and the Volatility Index VIX is still at 30. That ought to tell us something about the market environment we’re in. One piece of bad news could easily send us back to the recent lows, so keep that in mind if you’re trading short-term. Crude oil ($WTIC) is higher by 1.50% this morning to $45.28 per barrel, also remaining rather close to its recent lows - not a great signal for global economic conditions.

Gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 5.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.99/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.9 cents per gallon versus last week to $2.31/g, according to GasBuddy.

Average gasoline prices on December 24 in Texas have ranged widely over the last five years:$2.18/g in 2017, $2.06/g in 2016, $1.77/g in 2015, $2.10/g in 2014 and $3.05/g in 2013.
