Recognizing White Cane Awareness Day

White Cane Awareness Day on Oct. 15 is an opportunity to learn more about community resources available to people with vision loss and celebrate their achievements. Also known as White Cane Safety Day, the annual observance highlights the white cane as a valuable tool used by people who are visually impaired. The National Federation of the Blind notes that the white cane is a symbol of how people with blindness or vision loss can move around independently and safely.

Doyle Edwin Parker “Coach Parker”, age 87, passed away unexpectedly on October 7, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on August 30, 1937, Doyle graduated from Andrews High School and Hardin-Simmons University. In 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Latham, and they shared 64 years of love and adventure.
