The Andrews Mustangs basketball team opened their season against the 3A state-ranked Brownfield Cubs at home, and just couldn’t keep up with the Cubs’ offense, especially Clintavos Lawrence, in the second half to fall 79-55.

AMS 7th ‘B’ girls beat Pecos in opener

The Andrews Lady Mustangs 7th ‘B’ basketball team opened the season with a defensive-minded 1714 road win at Pecos.

Young AMS 7th ‘A’ finish season with 8-0-1 record

The Andrews Mustangs 7th ‘A’ football team claimed a 36-6 win over Lake View to finish the season with an 8-wins, no-losses and 1-tie record, and claim the district championship.

Fact 4 – Andrews will play Burnet in the bi-district round of the playoffs in San Angelo Thursday, November 14th at 7 p.m. Fact 5 – fact 2 is not guaranteed! Fresh from two lopsided wins, Andrews will host Lake View in a game the Mustangs should win, but for the umpteenth time – games are not played on paper. AHS is going to have to show up ready to play. “We really need to keep the momentum we have,” said Coach Tom Harvey of the game. “The kids are playing hard and having fun and they are such a great group of kids to coach because they never quit and they play hard. Like I tell the kids, we can finish 3-0 in district — plus we lost to a Greenwood team that has beaten up on some good teams, and we had them before penalties hurt us. We feel like we can play with anybody if we’ll just play and not get in our own way.” Lake View is going to pass the ball out of their spread attack about 70% of the time with QB Christopher Alvizo having plenty of weapons in Francisco Ramirez, Samuel Ramirez, Calvin Whitfield and Braylon White. “They are going to challenge us,” added Harvey. “They do a lot of things well on offense and they are going to keep you honest and take advantage of all the little things. They throw and catch pretty well. We will try and take the passing game away and see what happens.” On defense (4-3), the linebackers are their strength on that side of the ball—and what makes the Chiefs dangerous is they play extremely hard. Said Harvey, “They have talent on both sides of the ball, but the thing about them is they play extremely hard for their coach Hector Guevara. He gets so much out of his kids and they are going to be well-coached.” On Andrews’ side, they are not completely healthy, but they are ‘healthier’ than they have been in a long time. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Mustang Bowl.

Andrews 5U Flag Mustangs beat Rangers 26-12 to win Super Bowl

The Andrews YFL 5U Flag football team completed a three-game playoff sweep ending with a revenge 26-12 win over the Greenwood Rangers to claim the league’s Super Bowl title. The win over Greenwood was the Andrews boys second win over the Rangers and avenged their only season de-feat in triple overtime. Andrews blanked Greenwood in their first round of the playoffs 34-0 and the following week did the same to the Monahans Loboes 26-0 to advance to the Super Bowl game where they won by 14 points. Team members for the Super Bowl champions include Everett Lujan, Caleb Mejia, Sergio Peña, Lorenzo Lujan, Barrett Stewart, Ziggy Nuñez, Jovani Villarreal, Oscar Cordova, Ace Santibanez, Kane Luna, Axel Spring. Leightyn Walker, David Helms, Diego Baeza and Bradley Buck. Coaches are Bobby Nuñez, Corbin Stewart, Corey Lujan, Adrian Mejia and Travis Spring.

AMS 8th volleyball program goes 28-4

Sixteen volleyball matches and only one loss! Excellent! That is the best way to describe the Andrews Lady Mustangs 8th ‘B’ volleyball season after beating Monahans in their season finale 25-16, 22-25, 25-12. Jaelyn Neighbors had 14 serving points to lead the way followed by Isabel Rangel with 11, Khloe Morales and Addison Evans had 7 each, Layla Rondan 5 and Yareli Bejarano 2. Kaelyn Neighbors led the play at the net with 6 hits followed by Evans, Bejarano and Morales with 4 each and Rangel had 1. “I am so proud of my girls,” said coach Raelyn Ramirez. “They worked so hard all season and left everything on the court. Congrats to all the girls for their huge success.” The Andrews Lady Mustangs 8th ‘A’ volleyball team took care of Monahans in their last match of the season 25-10, 2518 to finish with an impressive 13-wins and 3-losses overall record. Ariel Snider led the AMS serving game with 12 points followed by Aubree Garcia with 7, Abby Shaffer had 6, Averi Cook 5 and Jailynn Criswell and Jolene Robles 1 each. The team had 43 hits or kills with Robles lead the way with 7 hits and 4 kills, Cook had 7 hits and 2 kills, Criswell had 8 hits, Snider 6 hits and 1 kill, Shafer 2 hits and 2 kills, Garcia 3 hits and Desi Lujan had a backrow hit. Also contributing to the win were Callie Flores, Destiny Nunez and Aubree Luna. an amazing season,” said coach Janet Lopez. “They worked hard each and every day and it showed in every one of our matches.”
