Bill would stop WCS’ plans for spent fuel storage

Waste Control Specialists’ longtime efforts to construct a facility for interim storage of used nuclear fuel could be tabled if proposed state legislation passes this session.

State Rep Brooks Landgraf this week filed House Bill 2692 that would prohibit the storage and disposal of high-level radioactive waste in West Texas.

Restaurants have varying plans with new executive order

The chairs will be coming off the tops of tables Wednesday at La Morena, according to owner Greg Revelez.

For the first time in nearly a year, La Morena and restaurants across Texas can operate at 100 percent capacity.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order earlier this week that ends a statewide mask mandate from July and opens businesses to full throttle. The executive order goes into effect Wednesday, March 10.

COVID-19 cases in Andrews County are at lows not experienced in months

Though COVID-19 appears to be loosening its grip locally, the health department recently reported two more virus-related deaths.

The two deaths that appeared in a county report late last month increased Andrews County’s total to 49 since the virus pandemic began about a year ago.

Health department officials have said their reports of deaths come after the state has logged numbers, meaning sometimes they occurred long before they were reported locally.

Man who stabbed victim in face and assaulted police officers sentenced

A man who stabbed a victim in the face following an argument at a southeast Andrews residence and later assaulted three police officers before being subdued by Taser and arrested last May was sentenced recently in 109th District Court.

Heriberto Menjivar Erazo received 10 years of probation (deferred adjudication), a $5,000 fine and 300 hours of community service on counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault public servant, according to district’s clerk’s office records.

Erazo was sentenced during a Feb. 19 hearing in 109th District Court.
