Census is looking to hire local residents

The U.S. Census Bureau is accepting applications from local residents for the upcoming 2020 count.

A variety of positions are available and they pay $15 per hour.

Those interested can apply online at 2020census.gov/jobs or call 1 855 562-2020.

“We want to make sure Andrews County has an accurate Census count in order to receive the necessary government funding for schools, roads, highways, state workforce programs and more in your area,” a representative with the Census Bureau said.

Head-on crash kills one driver, seriously injures the other one

A head-on collision southwest of Andrews Wednesday afternoon killed one driver and seriously injured the other, according to the investigating Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

The two-vehicle crash occurred around five miles from the state line on the Jal Highway (State Highway 128) and involved a pickup truck and a welding truck, DPS Trooper Max Molina said.

Thirty-five-year-old William Weatherred of Nocona, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene by Andrews County Justice of the Peace Mary Jane Baeza, according to Molina.

Man charged for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend multiple times after argument

An apparent argument at a southwest Andrews residence Wednesday night escalated into a local man allegedly stabbing his girlfriend multiple times and later being arrested at a different location after he fled the scene, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit.

Gracie Contreras, 28, sustained stab wounds to her left arm and side and was initially transported to Permian Regional Medical Center, the PC document states. She was later transported to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, according to a police department press release.

The numbers provided by Andrews Municipal Judge Debbie Gomez seem to speak for themselves on the matter.

“Andrews Teen Court volunteers logged 128 service hours to process 20-plus cases over the past nine months, with 14 of those cases that are now dismissed,” Gomez said. “This means at least 14 respondents were able to keep their records clear and now have an important second chance for a fresh start.”
