Friends and Family will gather to celebrate his life at 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 6, 2021, in the Andrews North Cemetery with Pastor Leslie Boone Officiating. The Family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at McNett Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home.

Gonzalo Mendoza, 51, of Andrews, TX passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021. Gonzalo was born to Ruperto and Elodia Mendoza Anchondo on January 10, 1970, in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Gonzalo was the life of the party, no doubt. He had a sense of humor that was sure to make everyone laugh. The things he could come up with were so crazy all you could do was laugh. He was, by far, one of the best people to spend time with. No matter where he was, people were sure to love him.

Redistricting plan would move Andrews County

A redistricting map being considered by a Texas House committee would move Andrews County from State Rep Brooks Landgraf’s House District 81 into a district to the north to better fit ideal populations for districts, according to state officials.

Landgraf, who sits on the Redistricting Committee, said in a social media post Tuesday population figures from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 count that impact redistricting interests motivated the possible change.

ACN grieves the loss of longtime photographer

Those with the newspaper are grieving the loss of longtime employee Linda Drake Kirchner, who died Sunday after a battle with COVID-19.

Kirchner, 68, worked as a photojournalist for nearly 40 years, including two stints with the Andrews County News. She was known for breaking news photos, whether it was waking up in the middle of the night to capture pictures of accidents and fires or following other stories from her police radio.

Kirchner received several awards for her photos during a career that dated back to her high school days in Andrews.

A fitness trip with veterans

Fitness is defined as the condition of being physically fit and healthy.

It’s a state for which A.J. Montanez is striving.

Whether it’s grueling 100-mile bicycle race or a run with the Andrews Run Club he organized over the summer, Montanez is all about the fitness aspect.

Montanez is also not afraid of trying new avenues to achieve it.

This weekend, he’ll hop aboard a trail bicycle for the Trail Warrior Project’s bike packing trip in the Rocky Mountains around Ruidoso.

Long road trip and tough Canyon team on menu for Andrews Friday

As if it is not enough that the Andrews Mustangs are coming of a loss where they were ahead 20-0 at one time -- now they get a Canyon Eagles team that on paper is the second toughest opponent on their 2021 schedule.

Zombie-walking with 2-4 uncharacteristically record, Coach Ralph Mason’s boys are just trying to hang on through struggles the Andrews program is not used to.

While it might be a different animal they are dealing with, it also builds from the inside out.

Mustangs picked to lose -- we thinking!

It’s refund time!

Or at least prorate it!

Have things gotten that bad!

Completely understand the Andrews High School football program is not used to going through hard times but to be left out completely from the Harris Ratings Weekly is unheard of.

Looked and looked and nothing!

Gave it another 10 looks and nothing!

That being said, a week after cracking the Top 20 at 18 th , Andrews dropped 34 spots to 52 nd this week.

AMS 7th ‘A’ football bounce back from 14-0 hole to win

The Andrews Mustangs 7 th ‘A’ football team claimed a solid 30-14 win over the Pecos Eagles last week.

Pecos scored on their opening drive and added another touchdown to go up 14-0.

Andrews had an answer – a good answer.
