AHS girls show up for ‘showdown’ in legit ways to take out 2-4A leaders

Things were pretty simple and legit when the Andrews Lady Mustangs hosted the Monahans Lady Loboes Tuesday.

Simple for head Coach Britney Hanna’s squad!

Legit on the outcome!

As easily the two best teams in 2-4A, the dreams and hopes of a district title were on the line at the PC before an extremely fired-up AHS crowd that gave the match the aura of a football game.

The simplicity of the match was that a Lady Mustangs loss would officially give the Mean Green the district title.

And that would be it!

Even so – it wasn’t.

Mustangs 9th blank Big Spring for 7th win

The Andrews Mustangs’ freshman football team put another check mark in the win column Thursday with an impressive a 45-0 road win over the Big Spring Steers.

The lopsided win kept the young Mustangs perfect for the season at 7-wins and no-losses and, more importantly, 1-0 in district play.

The Mustangs’ defense made the first big play of the game on an interception by Jaylon Jones. On the ensuing offensive drive, Jaxon Lawdermilk capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run for an 8-0 lead after the two-point conversion.

Suspect vehicle crashes after chase reaching 130 mph

HIGH SPEED PURSUIT

A man driving a vehicle stolen out of Hobbs, New Mexico, Wednesday morning led local law enforcement officers on a high speed chase later that day that reached speeds of 130 mph before he eventually crashed in southwest Andrews County, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

Tomas Lino Tapia of Hobbs attempted to flee on foot after he wrecked a stolen 2017 Toyota Avalon, but was quickly apprehended by officers, DPS trooper Caleb Rains said Thursday afternoon.

What the Andrews High School Cross Country boys’ and girls’ programs are doing is something they have done before!

A lot of times!

What they want – a state championship – is something they haven’t done (yet), but not only is their vision there in 2019 – so is the talent.

The Andrews boys, led by district champion Jasson Marquez with a 17:54, combined for a perfect score with a 15 and took it beyond that with all seven runners finishing first through seventh at the district meet in Pecos Monday to blow away the field.

With four teams in a five-team district earning a playoff berth, a trip into postseason was pretty much a done deal for the 2019 Andrews Lady Mustangs once league play got started.

For one, Coach Britney Hanna’s team is easily better than three of the four teams, including Pecos, Fort Stockton and Seminole and secondly, they are that good!

The Lady Mustangs not only claimed their fourth district win against one loss Tuesday in Pecos, but they did it the same way they had in their previous wins – in straight three game victories.
