The Pilot Flying J Travel Center on S. Main St. opened for business late last week, and attracted a large crowd of customers—most of whom appeared to be satisfied, based on social media comments.

Groundbreaking on the $5 million project began around mid-July and construction was completed in just over three months.

The initial stages involved demolishing an old structure at 1103 S. Main St. to make way for construction of the Pilot Flying J Travel Center.

Commissioners approve hiring new assistant county attorney

COMMISSIONERS COURT

The commissioners court on Tuesday approved hiring an assistant county attorney who will work under Andrews County/District Attorney Tim Mason. Commissioners acted on a recommendation from Mason to approve the full-time employment of Sean Galloway as assistant county attorney, according to Precinct Commissioner Jim Waldrop.

Galloway will replace longtime Andrews County Assistant Attorney Cassandra Cheek, who is stepping down from the role to assume a private practice in Midland, Waldrop said.

Three of six county incumbents have already announced re-election bids

ELECTION FILING

The filing period for the March Primary Election begins Saturday, and at least several of the county incumbents plan to file the first day, according to Andrews County Election Administrator Gracie Mendoza.

Mendoza said the filing period runs from Nov. 9 to 6 p.m. Dec. 9.

Typically, the vast majority of county candidates file through the Republican Party.

Randy Rowe serves as the local Republican Chair.

City’s growth attracts new name brand hotel project

The city’s growth trend spurred interest in the latest hotel project going up, according to the managing member of the investment group building it.

Site work has already begun on the three-story Cobblestone Hotel & Suites that will be located north of the Benny Boyd car dealership, while discussions are occurring for a restaurant not affiliated with the hotel to locate on the property as well.

The $7-million hotel’s official address will be 1400 N. Highway 385. Cobblestone Hotels & Suites will increase the number of brand name hotels in Andrews to four.

Capital murder case is set to go to trial Tuesday in district court

MURDER TRIAL

A capital murder case involving the death of a six-week old infant in Andrews from 2015 is scheduled for a jury trial next week, according to district clerk’s office records.

Two hearings occurred this week in 109th District Court regarding longtime cases against Julian C. Cardenas, who, along with Jennifer Elizabeth Muniz, was arrested in October of 2015 and charged with capital murder of a child under 10 years of age and injury to a child.
