For the last eight track seasons, the Andrews Lady Mustangs have gone to the Area meet and won it!

That’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and counting.

That is not just great but great and impressive.

On Thursday after a long trip to El Paso, AHS senior Kassidy Epperson stepped to the top of the podium three times, Jozlyn Arana twice and Paige Ortiz, Ashlynn Evans, Cecilia Cuevas and Ivette Carrasco once each to carry Coach Matt Gafford’s program to their eighth straight area title with 164 points. Sixty points behind was Mountain View.

Andrews 8th track boys claim district title with 204 points

Four individual gold medal wins by Keven Villegas, Gavin Ortiz, Ryan Gafford and Leeroy Millan plus two of the three relay teams reaching the finish line first was more than enough to lead the Andrews Middle School 8 th grade boys track team to the district title Friday with an unheard of 204 points. In the 7 th grade level, the Andrews boys settled for third place with 143 points.

Numbers are a big game in high school athletics.

The more the merrier!

The Andrews Mustangs track team knows that just as well as anybody in ‘Black and Gold’ sports programs.

AHS Coach Bill Stotts and his busload of qualifiers proved just that when they traveled to El Paso Thursday for the 4A Area meet and despite having only one first-place showing, netted more than enough points to win the team title with 126 points. Seminole was second with 92.

Make no mistake, the Andrews Lady Mustangs had their backs to the wall going into their rare Wednesday game in Seminole.

Behind one game to the league undefeated Lady Maidens (7-0) and with just three games left in the race – it was do or die for Coach Darren Pool’s girls if the district 2-4A championship was their team goal.

Fighting to remain at the top of the league standings, the Andrews Mustangs dropped a 12-8 2-4A contest to Seminole to drop to 4 and 2 in league play and in a three-way tie with Fort Stockton and Seminole.

Two of the most highly anticipating games of the high school seasons both blew away with the threeinch ‘hail storm’ that somewhat surprised the small town just 28 miles to the North Tuesday evening to force Andrews and Seminole sports fans to take a step back.
